Helping your kids to learn how to read is no walk in the park. It’s normal that each child will learn how to read at different times, and some won’t enjoy the process at all. Creating way that make reading more exciting is a great way to motivate those who seem to struggle.

Reading with our kids and having them learn to read to us is something that we have to make a conscious effort to do. It is a great way to wind down for the night… if that is, it is being enjoyed. With a few simple tips and tricks I have recently picked up reading time has transformed into a much more enjoyable activity.

If reading becomes exciting for our son, whether it is the place that it takes place, how it begins or what we are reading about, we areoff to a good start. This year I wanted to make a goal to find new ways to have him read to us that might change his attitude around learning to read. For those that might also have a harder time creating a positive experience around teaching your kids to read you might also find these strategies to be helpful.

How to Make Reading More Enjoyable for Your Kids

1. Create a Reading Space // Do you have a special  place that you read to your kids or have them read to you? My sister gave me this idea when she set up a play tent at her house with faux fur and pillows and called it their reading nook. Her kids will grab a book and have time to themselves going through the pages and enjoying their quite reading time in their fun relaxing area.

2. Wrap Them Up // This is something that we have done at Christmas time leading up until Christmas. I had the idea from a friend to wrap up all of our Christmas books and then each day before Christmas open up a new book. Why not do this for books that your kids are learning to read. It adds a bit of mystery and anticipation for when they are opening up the ‘gift’ and they become more excited to dive in.

3. Read Together // Some days it’s a bit harder to get your kids motivated to start reading. It can be easy to get frustrated, but it is important to remember to stay positive and encouraging. It is ok to help out and even take turns reading. It might be a good idea to choose a longer book and then take turns reading page by page or paragraph by paragraph. If you can see that your child is having a harder time getting through the book of choice, maybe offer in this suggestion to encourage to not give up and keep going.

4. Include the Siblings // When both of the kids are eager to sit down to read it has worked out well to have our oldest read some books to our younger one. Even though the books are often easy to read books and don’t challenge our oldest it is still so rewarding and boosts his confidence. Being able to be in a teacher role adds a new level of excitement and allows for a new dynamic during reading time.
